The Grecian Temple at the Abercorn Rooms, Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool Street was our home From 1966 - 1988 and many of the present brethren remember it with great affection.
It has undergone many changes over the past few years culminating eventually in its closure following the buy out by the Conran Group, who have effectively closed it down and moth balled it for the indefinite future.
The Temple is Grade I listed (as opposed to the hotel which is only Grade II) and was constructed out of 19th Century Italian marble which has now been worked out. Even the lamp shades were made out of thin cut marble. To be standing in this room, whether for a Masonic meeting, or just to admire its beauty was an uplifting and moving, as well as tranquil experience. Its beauty and splendour are unparalled and it is a tragedy that the present management have taken the ruthless and purely economic decision to close it down thus denying future Freemasons from admiring its splendour.
I have therefore included this pictorial tribute to the Grecian Temple so that Brethren who were initiated within its walls, as well as brethren who have never seen, and who will never again see its splendour, may have, or remember, some of its magnificence.
