Prior
to the Union of the Antients and Moderns on August 18th 1817 many
Lodges practiced what was then known as the "Fourth Degree"
or "Holy Royal Arch:".
The Lion & Lamb Lodge No. 258 (now 192), from its origin in 1789 to the end of 1813 was empowered to confer the Degree on any qualified member.
The two rival Grand Chapters united on August 18th 1817.
Chapters working before the Union were required to signify to Grand Chapter the Lodges to which they desired to be attached, and were granted a fair time for their decision, as well as Confirmation Warrants on making such known.
Had the 'Lion & Lamb' Royal Arch Masons sent due information of their wishes to Grand Chapter and become connected with the Lodge, the Chapter would have obtained a Centenary Jewel Warrant for the Companions, just as with the members of the Lion & Lamb No 192, but they neglected to apply within the stipulated time, and so the privilege has been forfeited. Had they done this, a Centenary Jewel Warrant would have been granted in 1889, as with the Lion & Lamb Lodge No. 192.
Possibly separate Royal Arch Chapter minutes were kept as a few other Lodges did, but if so, they have not been preserved. The only entry in those of the Lodge are as follows:
Sunday 26th January 1812.

On March 2nd 1781, Bro. Ebenezer Roberts (W.M. 1870), proposed and seconded by Bro. George Abbott and carried unanimously :- "That a Royal Arch Chapter be formed in connection with the Lodge, to be called the Lion and Lamb Chapter" and on the 1st November 1871 a Charter was obtained for that purpose.
The Consecration took place on January 10th, 1872.
Comp. Henry Muggeridge, P.Z., P.G.St.B., being the Consecrating Officer, was assisted by Comp. James Brett, G.DoC. A conclave of Installed Principals was then formed and Companion Henry Muggeridge, P.G.St.B., duly installed Companions G. Kenning as M.E.Z., E. Roberts as H., and E. King as J.
Bye-Laws of the Chapter were printed and circulated on 20th October 1875.
Furniture and Jewels were purchased in 1873 for £108.18.3.
In those days the P.Soj. appointed his own Assistants up to 21st October 1885.
In April 1877, it was unanimously agreed that a Jewel, then costing £5.5.0 be poresented to the retiring P.Z.
The Annual Subscription of £1.11.6 was raised to £2.2.0 from 18th July 1877 and remained so for seventy years until 1946 when it was raised to £2.12.6. and now stands at £25.00.
The first printed Balance Sheet of the Chapter to be distributed to the Companions was on 19th January 1881.
The first Minute Book shows a recording of convocations extending over forty years from November 1871 to October 1911.
From its inception, the Lion and Lamb Chapter held four Convocations each year on the Third Wednesday in January, April, July and October, until the 18th April 1900, when the Present and Past Principals resolved, by 5 votes to 3, to alter the Bye-Laws, so that the Convocations be held on the Third Wednesdays in the months of January, May and October.
The last time the Chapter met at the Cannon Street Station Restaurant, (previously known as the City Terminus Hotel), was on the 17th January 1940.
On account of the war, the May and October convocations were held over until the 19th February 1941. In the meantime, due to Enemy Action, the Cannon Street Station Restaurant had been demolished and the new venue was at the Abercorn Rooms, Liverpool Street, and has remained so until May 1982. The chapter now meets at The Gun Tavern, Spitalfields.
