The Chapter was consecrated on 10th January 1872 but had existed since 1789, practising what was then know as the "Fourth Degree" or "Royal Arch". The Lion & Lamb Lodge No.258 (now192) from its origin in 1789 was empowered like many other lodges to confer the Degree on any qualified member prior to the Union of the Ancients and Moderns in 1813. As I am sure you are aware, when the two Grand Chapters united in 1813 , Chapters working prior to the union were required to signify to Grand Chapter which Lodge they desired to be attached to within a reasonable period of time. This would enable Confirmation and Warrant to be issued. Regretfully members of the Chapter did not register, otherwise the Chapter would have been granted a Centenary Jewel Warrant in 1889 as with the Lion & Lamb Lodge No. 192.
On 2nd March 1871 it was proposed and seconded that a Royal Arch
Chapter be formed in connection with the Lion & Lamb Lodge
and on 1st November 1871 the Charter was obtained and the Consecration
took place on 10th January 1872. The annual subscription was £1.1s.6d.
which was raised to £2.2s.0d. in 1877 and remained so until
1946 when it was raised to £2.12s.6d. From its inception
the Chapter held four Convocations each year until 1900 when the
Present and Past Principals voted five votes to three to alter
the Bylaws to three Convocations per year. The Chapter met at
the Cannon Street Station Restaurant until 1940. Due to the war.
Convocations for May and October were held over until February
1941 - by which time the restaurant had been destroyed by enemy
action. The new venue was at the Abercorn Rooms and remained so
until 1982 when we moved to The Gun Tavern in Spitalfields. On
31st January 1972 we celebrated our Centenary. The Centenary Charter
was presented by Ex. Comp. J.W.Stubbs - Grand Scribe E. Representing
The Most Excellent, The First Grand Principal to Ex. Comp. E.W.S.
Press MEZ.
In 1983 we hosted the Emergency Convocation at Freemasons Hall,
Great Queen Street, to receive the Most Excellent Third Grand
Principal, the Rev. Francis G.W.W. Heydon who invested the recipients
of Senior London and London Grand Chapter Rank for 1983. Since
that time we have suffered from a series of deaths of Companions,
many of whom were still young, which has certainly weakened the
Chapter in numbers but we believe we have begun to turn the corner
and look forward to the future. There are three Lodges that feed
this Chapter-Lion & Lamb No. 192, Fenchurch Lodge No.5663
and Lodge of Contentment No.8050.
